you totally loved jason salavon, i know.
today i have 2 ladies for you to check out. the first is lilly mcelroy whose project "i throw myself at men" manages to be funny and also a pointed commentary on gender dynamics. she, quite literally, throws herself at men - unsuspecting men - and gets photographed mid-air, pre-collision. "If a woman tries to form a romantic connection, she is automatically considered desperate, and i don't agree with that." right on sister, me neither.
second is some of the most outstanding hand-wrought work i've ever seen. cal lane turns old rusty shovels and wheelbarrows, oil drums and abandoned cars into the most delicate filigree lace "industrial doilies". when i read that back it sounds more like craft than art, but i promise you will be floored by her technique, the ephemeral quality she pulls from her materials, and the political ramifications of a series like "crude", which depicts christian iconography on split open oil cans.
heavy.
