holmes

i saw sherlock holmes today - i never see first-run movies but you knew i'd see this one. short story is i liked it. [you can stop reading here if you just wanted the short version]

ok long version.. i went to film school and am kinda sick about this particular niche so of course i have an opinion.. my only qualms are more directorial than anything else and i won't bore you much with them. it is certainly my favorite guy ritchie film, but that's not really a huge compliment in itself. that i'm not sad to have thrown away $11 is a big compliment though, as that happens once every 6 or 8 years. i can't really remember the last big new thing i saw that i liked. it was pretty (though not as high-victorian pretty as my beloved jeremy brett holmes series) and a bit deadwood-y which i think is a nice believable texture - hey it's the right era. more of that would be great. just make it sweeny todd already man because that i buy as realistic and would totally eat up. aside from trying to please too many people at once and a missing scene or two it is pretty allright. though to make a holmes in this day and not have it be really gritty and gorey and sexy and sharp is kind of a sin to my mind. i love that he's funny, but he should be lethal genius oscar wilde funny. and what's interesting about victorian society is the contrast between the nasty reality of the street and the gorgeous upper class tightwad facade. irene is a perfect vehicle for all that and they missed it. i think the actual plot was a bit too easy for a modern csi-fed audience to unravel (as opposed to the original stories which are fairly impenetrable) and there weren't any tasty twists (spielberg wins on that w young sherlock holmes - hay we never got our sequel there..) i guess we have to wait for the next installment for that. and to meet mycroft - it was just cruel to mention him and not introduce him.

one last thing, jude law is also in a jeremy brett holmes story - watch the episode on netflix - shoscombe old place, in a rather sexy bit in 1991.
whatever i think critically i know i will have sweet robert downey jr. dreams tonight..
/end geekout>

*EDIT** on a fashion note i would be remiss if i didn't mention irene's perfectly tailored tweed menswear vest & knickers which i want bad. wish she had newsboy shoes on instead of boots w heels, but i have a fetish for men's shoes. but, no, srsly if you're trying to sell me this lady in a suit in that day then she needs to be in full drag. holmes' wide-wale corduroy coat is tasty too.

under the tree

christmas with ma & the neighbors was great. it was fun to share family stories with a different family. and they served an amazing home-cooked german feast: roulade - beef rolled with mustard and onions and a dill pickle - and red cabbage and applesauce and the whole spiel. augezeichnet!
and under the tree? as usual ma found some great vintage tidbits. she collects these things all year long on her thrift adventures for me:

best ever 50s clip-on bowtie.. pink w blue & black wagon train motif

60s big-eyed girl giant cameo brooch. ma said it reminded her of me - she used to do my hair like that when i was a big-eyed girl.

this is an antique glue bottle! kwik-stick brand. here you can see the paddle says 'spread with this'. i think the top is spring loaded for dispensing - i have yet to pry it open and see what's going on.
**EDIT** i just googled this guy and found out it is from 1919.

50s ice skates w original box. next year i'll defly have to do the full christmas display with these.

and finally this:

'just like elizabeth taylor and all the other movie stars' ma said. ca. 1983. i wanted one of these bad when i was little. this one has its original instructions - this is the muraphone 'bon jour' model. now i can dial 9-1-1 in high style, just like liz!

other christmas/birthday things that didn't end up under the tree (ie: ordered online, etc. w giftcards, etc. - dec is a big month for me - thank you everyone!) included a wii (finally!! so fun), my serger, a class at the clay studio and one more thing that has yet to arrive.. i ordered myself a pair of vivienne westwood winged rocking horse platforms.. pink marble rubber.. guh can't wait to show you!!

christmas mittens

i'm off soon for christmas with ma.. the neighbors have invited us for a traditional german christmas dinner - isn't that a sweet holiday dream come true?
i woke up early and whipped up this pair of long mittens and a turban style hat from a 50 cent white/pine green knit remnant. i'm going to try the mittens again with a bit more room in the thumbs, but they are cozy enough for today.

hope you're all enjoying the day, whether it's christmas for you or not

easiest dress ever

this should be your first serger project. save up or ask santa next year or whatever you have to do - $200 on amazon for the one i have.. it isn't fancy but it is easy to use and gets the job done. grab some of this perma-pleat stuff at the fabric store (this is 2yds - uncut from th $1/yd section) and make it a tube. finish the edges with the rolled hem stitch - that makes it ruffle up - and close at the right places for it to sit on your shoulders - you can either handstitch or go over the rolled edges w a little wider tablecloth edge.

this polyester accordian pleat fabric hangs beautifully and is easy to sew. this is now my favorite dress.. super versatile and classic and comfy. and machine washable.. those pleats aren't going anywhere ever. here it is w lowslung thrifted brown leather belt vs. 30s diamante' paste:

corny decided to get in the middle of everything.

o and here w the piece i made it for:

i think this is going to be my christmas dress.

brace

i was looking at vintage fan lace corsets the other week - i love the look of them but i don't really do overt sexuality like that. then i found this:

it's a posture support brace - the kind you still find in advertised the backs of magazines - from around the turn of the century.

super love. i want to make a flowy filmy red dress special to wear under it.

the seller said it is victorian but i doubt that. there are no patent numbers on the pins and clips and the elastic isn't right. plus why would corseted victorian ladies need posture support? the print on the word 'medium' inside is a dead giveaway - no earlier than 1900, and even that seems early. the buttons are bone but they don't match each other and so i think they are replacements for rubber buttons. i am hunting or an ad for one of these.. it may take me a few years to track that down.

and here's a better pic of those shoes: 30s style chie mihara star-studded pumps dug up at the outlet for a steal.

a la page

or is it de la page when your suit and tie and shirt are all the same color?

you can see why i had to venture out in the snow for the yellow lace rodarte for target cardigan. w my homemade marni pants and yellow docs it sort of had to happen. the docs are from '92 - my folks tracked down my fav color for xmas that year (aw.)
it also goes nicely w the bikeshorts i made last night:

no lace socks or leopard belts came to targets here in philly. frowny face. i did try on the leopard dress that i liked in pics, but in person the fit was way off. i am ususally a 0-4 depending on the label, but the 7 was the only one i could get my arms into (and my arms are pretty scrawny) and then i had big elephant ear hips. even here, the cardi i got is a large - i couldn't bend my elbows in the small, let alone wear a shirt underneath. some of the dresses are really pretty and sweet, though the skeleton one is not so attractive in real life. i have a feeling that folks who are spending a ton on ebay for that one will be sad.

new best friend

i used the snow day to get to know my new serger. LOVE. brother 1034 - it runs so smoothly and wasn't even too difficult to thread.

and here's what i did with it:

3/4 sleeve T and skirt. i really like this batik print knit, even though it is brown.

in progress

another 2 feet or so to go.. this one will be in the shop when it is finished.
