i am now on the look-out for an attractive bird cage. preferably vintage or vintage style, with a bit more room so they can flit about. most decorative birdcages are unsuitable for actual birds. and most big bird cages have too-large spaces between the bars for larger birds. i will find or make the right one eventually.
corny is sitting on the end of the bed drooling at them..
they came from the spca, like most of our animals. ma had collected quite a few and i so took this pair off her hands. thanks ma!

I've seen tons of lovely ones on eBay. However, could be a bit pricey to order there vs. finding one locally perhaps & saving yourself the S&H fees... Good luck! Looking ffw to your findings soon! Cheers, Julie
thanks guys! i looked on ebay for a while and love a lot of them, but it's so hard to see if anything has any rust on it (very toxic to the birdies!) so i think i'm going to be patient and keep checking out estate sales and flea markets. the perfect roost is out there somewhere.
i think i need to search for 'aviary' instead of cage to find a larger size w the close-together bars.
check out this link, might be what you're looking for!

omg dottcomm1 that is exactly what i was thinking about! thank you so much :D
i was just going to link you to a craftzine make it yourself birdcage i saw, but i think that dotcomm1 just did! i like 'keeters, i had one named vinnie that was blue. birds are such joys and i havent really appreciated what sweet animals they were until a few years ago when i had the patience to sit down and spend time with one. also, im so happy theyre rescued animals! i would love it if my mom let me get some more animals from our local shelter, but no room she says. your birdies look so happy!
this little pair is so cute! good luck finding a suitable cage.
i just saw the one on craftzine and thought of you too! it is truly beautiful. can't wait to see what you come up with!
haha it looks like i picked a good day to get birdcages on the brain!
i went to ikea yesterday and got an easily hackable piece of furniture and some mesh from the hardware. i'll let you all know how it goes!!
i can't wait to see the finished project!
have you ever gone into the scratch and dent section in ikea? you can get some great deals for projects like this.
dottcomm: great minds.. tho i should have driven out of the city for it as the ikea clearance room here in philly is always pretty empty. but i did go and get their new kids sniglar wardrobe to hack into this aviary :D i need to figure out the doors yet but soon i hope to have these guys flying around in their new home.
you have to check out the ikea in elizabeth. they have a great clearance room!
i can't wait to see the finished product. the birds are going to be so happy!
where in philly do you live? my husband works near the court house and i have a good friend near the art museum (which is how i know those cool mosaics).
dott: i usually go out to the one in conshohocken, they too have a great clearance room, and aren't a madhouse 7 days a week.
i'm in sketchy north philly, closer to the jersey bridges. it's cost effective and i just drive everywhere :D
i'm going to be in philly wed the 19th and will have a day to kill hre. any suggestions for cheap but nice fabric?
dottcomm1: you should try jomar!
http://jomarstores.com/directions-jackson.cfm
it is behind the target/shoprite, next to foreman mills. just go past the racks of discount clothing and right up the stairs and you will be in cheap/great fabric heaven.
it's best to go w an idea of what you're looking for - the place is totally disorganized.. just giant rolls everywhere - but be open to grab up some great surprises.
good luck! if you run into me their be sure to say hi!
